How Friend in LA works

From your first signup to your first local plan, every step is designed for verified adults in Greater Los Angeles — with clear gates, privacy controls, and upgrade paths when you want more visibility.

1. Join with email

Register with an email address you control and choose a strong password. Friend in LA is for adults 18 and older. During registration you agree to our Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, and Community Guidelines — the same standards that govern every member interaction.

Your account starts in a limited state until you complete verification steps. That keeps discovery and messaging away from throwaway signups and gives you a cleaner community from day one.

2. Verify your phone

After email confirmation, verify a US mobile number via SMS code. Phone verification is required before your account becomes fully active. The Phone Verified badge on profiles means we confirmed number control at signup — not a background check or character reference.

If you change numbers later, you will need to re-verify to keep uninterrupted access. SMS preferences and consent history are available in your account settings.

3. Build your profile

Onboarding walks you through identity basics, goals, ZIP and radius, interests, prompts, and photos. You choose what you are looking for — friendship, activity partners, dating, or a mix — so discovery can surface relevant people.

Preview your profile before publishing. You can update photos, privacy settings, and preferences anytime from your account. Exact ZIP and coordinates remain private; other members see approximate distance only.

4. Discover by distance

Browse profiles within your chosen radius across the Greater Los Angeles service area. Each card shows shared interests, prompts, verification badges, and approximate distance — enough context to decide whether to like or pass without oversharing location data.

Free members receive a meaningful . Plus and Premium plans increase limits and may unlock , , and . Discovery never shows your precise address.

5. Match when interest is mutual

Liking someone sends a signal; a match forms only when they like you back. That mutual gate keeps unsolicited inbox flooding down and makes first messages feel earned rather than random.

(on eligible plans) stand out in the other person's queue. If someone makes you uncomfortable before or after a match, block and report tools are available from their profile and from any conversation.

appear on plans that include them. Message history stays in your account; deleting a match may archive the thread according to your privacy settings. Harassment, spam, and off-platform payment requests violate Community Guidelines and should be reported immediately.

7. Request a video call (optional)

When text chat feels sufficient, either person can request a short . The other member accepts or declines — no means no, without penalty. Video can help you feel comfortable before a first in-person plan, especially when schedules are tight.

Calls are not recorded by default. Use the same safety instincts as any online interaction: do not share financial information, keep initial calls brief, and end the session if pressure or inappropriate behavior appears.

8. Attend member events

Friend in LA publishes member and Elite events with RSVP caps, waitlists when needed, and staff moderation. Events are a structured way to meet people in person without a one-on-one first date pressure — group walks, creative sessions, neighborhood mixers, and similar.

Some events require paid tickets; others are included with membership. Venue details may unlock closer to the event for privacy. Review event policies before you RSVP.

9. Upgrade — or apply for Elite — when it fits
